Frank Turner photo research

Frank Turner
I took a look at Frank Turner because he is a famous musician and there was bound to be quite a few photographs of him in certain areas. The areas that he is photographed in are similar to the area’s he grew up in such as urban, rundown area’s that display him in an effective way it almost gives of an emotive feel. These photos are what I was trying to show in my images so when I saw them they stuck out to me. Here they are just 3 simple images that work so well.

Proposal

Proposal

In this assignment I am going to create an i-D magazine cover and contents for my chosen word for the letter that I have been given which is 'Q' and I have chosen 'Quality'.
In this project I am trying to express the Quality of 'Taylor' guitars to my audience, I will take some shots in the studio and two locations in Burton upon Trent.
I am looking for urban areas mainly to show street fashion with the guitar and also to reach out to many different cultures and fashion types. This idea will also create nice images that guitar players would look at and read about.
This is what I plan to do.

Evaluation

EVALUATION

In this assignment we were asked to create a magazine cover and contents for an i-D Magazine project.

I really enjoyed this task as we were given a letter to use as the topic. I was given 'Q' which in my first and successful attempt at presenting a cover involved a rubber duck which covered the models eye which represented the word 'Quack'. I used colour splash to highlight the duck to make it stand out. I found this to be a very enjoyable piece of work to edit and present.
Unfortunately someone else used my idea in their work later on which led me to change my word.
I then chose 'Quality' which represented 'Quality Taylor Guitars'.
In preparation for this task I researched quite a few artists to find inspiration and techniques. I found many covers which helped greatly with how I wanted to present mine.
I really liked the colour task as we all put our ideas together to create body sculptures and I believe we were somewhat successful. Henrik Adamsen was my full inspiration for my final cover image, he creates delicate yet elegant work and I have admired his unique photo's. He is an artist that I have kept note of and followed within my work not only in this project but in past work.

Overall, I have enjoyed each and every moment of this i-D task and have learnt new things along the way which have improved my understanding in the subject. I believe that although it was a tricky task and I had hit some bumps along the way that I have overcome them well and created some nice work for the magazine.

Research artist - Lee Friedlander

Lee Friedlander

Friedlander is a very well known photographer, more well known for his street fashion and reflection photography such as his famous car wing mirror image.
Lee has a keen eye for what looks good, take the photo below for example. The frames in the shop are hung but they look like they float and it helps create a wild looking reflection which I like.
Lee is photographer which has covered nearly every area of photography and is definitely a great person to study.

Research artist - Helen Levitt

Helen Levitt

Levitt's photography is very nice, I have warmed to her type of photography and it works nicely.
I personally like how all of her work is shot on film, even though it was the 1970's she still produced brilliant images for that time era.
This image by Levitt is probably my favourite of her work its the mystery behind what this girl is doing, is she drunk or is it public indecency.
The best part of the image for me is the contrast of the car, the image is in some ways aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Research artist - Henrik Adamsen

Henrik Adamsen

Adamsen's work on covers for FAULT magazine are quite unique. The eye-catching native indian headpiece create a powerful and bold effect against the black background, everything in the image works well. The female model has a slouch pose which fits the direction of the headpiece and how it curves. Adamsen is really talented at having a good understanding of what model fits his type of photography and they wear it well.
The contrasts in his images are brilliant such as the striped top the female has on and the way she moved her legs and body into sexual pose. Every colour in this image matches another.

I really like the extravagant and eye catching head piece that wraps itself around the right side of the face. It seems very mannequin-ish as the face is so neutral/deadpan. The style is has the effect off not getting boring because each time you look at it you find something new such as the shadow on the left side creating a dark look on the image.

i-D covers

                        i-D cover image.
I have chose this image to annotate because of the techniques and variety cleverly used.
The split colours show different sides for example the yellow side is warm and calming yet the pink side seems more wild. This image seems to be one photo. Its definitely an effective way of presenting the wink.
This seems very pop arty like a merging of 60's and 80's style.

I-D LOGO THAT I WILL BE USING.

PROPOSAL

In this assignment I will be using a portrait shot for my magazine. I need to use the letter 'Q' so I am going to use a subtle object to symbolise my letter/word. Right now I like the use of a rubber yellow duck for the word "quack". As it is an I-D Magazine cover I will be creating the trade mark cover-up of the right eye.
Depending on my image I may use colour splash, B&W or just original image.
I want to make the image a mid-shot portrait involving one model, a rubber duck to cover the eye and a blank background which makes the main focus on the model stand out.

Introduction

Introduction

The assignment aims to develop the breadth and depth of learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills in communication through art and design by studying how practitioners use primarily visual imagery to communicate ideas, messages and meaning, and then applying findings to their own ideas. It also aims to develop skills through experience in selected types of specialist location photography, by creating and developing an understanding of types of specialists location photography; reviewing work in reference to professional requirements of the identified type of specialist location photography.
Professional photographers who work on location usually specialise in particular types of photography and are highly skilled in meeting the needs of their particular client groups. Photographers may be commissioned to work at an interior or exterior location. There will be many considerations for the photographer at the planning stage, e.g. hiring and transportation of kit. To produce effective photographs a professional photographer must have comprehensive knowledge of the specialist subject; well-developed visual skills are important. The photographer also needs to understand their working environment. A good appreciation of the qualities of typical locations allows the photographer to use the characteristics of the environment effectively to create a unique result. (Unit 31)
The ability to communicate ideas in original and innovative ways is essential for creative practitioners. In every vocational field of art craft and design, practitioners need to continuously review and update their knowledge, and understanding of skills in using new and more effective methods of communicating ideas.
